Welcome

Girl making Collage

St Elizabeth’s is a non-maintained DfES recognised special residential and day school.  We are located in a sixty-eight acre parkland campus in rural Hertfordshire which we share with St. Elizabeth’s College ( post 19 ) and St. Elizabeth’s Adult Residential Home with Nursing .

The school was founded in 1903 by the Catholic Order of Sisters known as the Congregation of the Daughters of the Cross of Liege.  It specialised in supporting and educating young people with epilepsy and has developed a reputation for expertise in this field.  Although the school is based upon our Christian principles of love, dignity and respect to those who it serves, referrals are accepted regardless of religious or cultural backgrounds.

Mission Statement

Our School Community is together:-

  • To be a sign of our Love of God and for each other
  • To share the Good News with all we meet
  • To live and learn together
  • To make our world a better place for all
  • And to grow together in this love by doing the best in all that we do

St. Elizabeth’s uses its expertise and multi-disciplinary approach to cater for pupils who present with a profile of complex learning and medical needs, including epilepsy, autism and associated social and communication difficulties, some challenging behaviours, moderate and severe learning needs.  Our pupils require access to highly specialist teams which include teachers, nursing staff, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and skilled care workers who liaise together to ensure an integrated and co-ordinated approach. Our teams are complemented by outside professionals such as consultant neurologists from Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Pupils can attend the school on a day or residential basis. All pupils attending the school must have a statement of special educational needs and are funded by their local education authority. Referrals for a placement can be made through the local authority, the child’s local PCT or social services. Parents are encouraged to visit the school and meet staff and pupils at work and play by telephoning the school office on 01279 844 270 and arranging a convenient time for a visit which usually takes two hours.

Pupils display very positive attitudes to school and frequently show a high level of enjoyment in response to the activities provided. There are many examples of pupils who have made outstanding improvement in their behaviour since joining the school. Attendance is outstanding parents say that their children are excited when returning to school and they want to attend. OfSTED 2007
