St Elizabeth’s College offers young people between the ages of 18 and 25 with a range of special needs, including epilepsy, the opportunity to develop the skills needed to move towards adulthood and an independent, more fulfilled lifestyle.
The College brings together learning, housing, care and health into a holistic, coordinated package of support and development and a lifestyle experience which mirrors that to which the learners might aspire.
Living and learning are seamless and students ‘learn by doing’ with their rights and responsibilities as tenants at the heart of their learning over 52 weeks.
The College programme prepares learners for a fulfilled life of living, learning, work and leisure in the wider community and follows the mission of The Congregation of the Daughters of the Cross of Liege who have been providing education and care for 175 years to bring to life Christ's words:
"I have come so that they may have life and have it to the full".
Currently 37 learners are tenants of Housing Associations in Much Hadham and Bishops Stortford. The innovatory nature of the transition programmes at the College is fully reflected in the style of the curriculum and its delivery.
Learning is about real situations in everyday life. Tasks such as managing bank accounts, shopping, cooking and using local facilities are structured to develop independence skills. Numeracy, literacy and ICT skills are embedded and enhanced in real life situations.
City and Guilds qualifications are achieved in a range of practical life skills and there are a range of social enterprises and work placements to meet the learners’ vocational needs
There is comprehensive provision of nursing and therapeutic input into the curriculum including speech and language, clinical psychology, physiotherapy, multi-sensory, art, and drama.
