Learning Disability Week 2019

Learning Disability Week 2019

Did you know it's Learning Disability Week (17th-23rd June)? This year the focus has been on sport and social inclusion.

Sport and physical activity can reduce loneliness and isolation. Benefits for people with and without a learning disability include improved health and well-being, empowerment and greater social inclusion.

Mencap surveyed over 300 18-35 year olds with a learning disability from September to November in 2015 and found that:

49% would like to spend more time outside their house
18% feel alone and cut off from other people
1 in 3 spend less than 1 hour outside their homes on a typical Saturday

Across St Elizabeth's, our students, learners, adult residents and day clients take part in regular physical activity, and host lots of fun and games which promote social inclusion among their peers.

Our adult residents and day clients have been having lots of fun this week in the pool, riding horses, at the gym and playing cricket right here in our sports hall!
