Percussion Treatment for Dysphagia

Due to difficulties with swallowing and chewing, one of our adult residents was frequently aspirating (inhaling food, stomach acid, or saliva into her lungs) which can lead to lung infections, lung complications and pneumonia. As a result, she was regularly requiring treatment in hospital and oxygen therapy, often involving overnight stays which she found very difficult.

One of our physiotherapists recommended “Percussion Treatment” (a manual technique to help clear the lungs), and all staff were trained how to administer it daily.

As a result, she is much happier: she needs less oxygen therapy and suctioning, and it has vastly reduced the number of emergency visits to the hospital she has made in the last year.
